Did Darwin Kill God?

Last night 800 people packed Westminster Abbey (where Charles Darwin is buried) for a debate entitled "Did Darwin kill God?"

The event, superbly chaired by Today's Sarah Montague, explored the compatibility of belief in God and Darwinian evolution. On the panel were Lord Winston (a Jew), Professor Steve Jones (an atheist or 'non-theist' to use his preferred term), Dr Denis Alexander (a Christian), and Professor Dame Nancy Rothwell (an agnostic).

In case it has escaped your notice (which, admittedly, would be difficult) 2009 is a double Darwin anniversary year. On 12 February, we celebrated the 200th anniversary of Charles Darwin's birth. On 24 November, it will be the 150th anniversary of the publication of The Origin of Species.
