Although the UK Parliament recently voted against assisted dying with a notably sizeable majority, much confusion remains around the issue. In particular, campaigners for physician–assisted suicide have made a great play for the idea of dignity, on the alleged basis that dignity is predicated on little more than choice.

By placing the assisted suicide debate in a wider context of what it means to be a human being – living and dying – this essay, written by Andrew Grey, seeks to show how a true and complete understanding of humanity allows us to go beyond a debate about independence, rights and choice, and affirm a truly dignified life and death for people.
