As prophecies go, the one made by John Maynard Keynes in his short 1930 essay ‘Economic Possibilities for our Grandchildren’ must rate as an economic ‘Peace in our Time’.
Appearing in a debate at the Cheltenham Literary Festival last year, I was asked a straight question about Christian activity within party politics. The chair quoted a line from the postscript of my book on the influence of the Bible on British politics – “The real threat to Christian politics lies not in its tendency to fixate on a particular position but its inability to do so” – and then turned to me and said, “What you seem to be saying is that you want to see more political unity among Christians.”
Sport should be released from the burden of expectations that it will make us fitter, peace-loving and more prosperous and be promoted purely because of its fun value, according to a report released in advance of the Olympic Games.

2012 is the great summer of sport—the greatest since the last great summer of sport. Which was probably last summer or the summer before. In fact, the really unusual thing these days would be a summer without much sport. And forget the back page, it’s front page stuff nowadays.
In a comment piece in Wednesday’s London Evening Standard, Douglas Carswell MP – a refreshingly libertarian voice in the age of cuddly/progressive/compassionate Conservatism - took up the Church of England’s recent claim that the same-sex marriage would push the Church in the direction of disestablishment.
